INGLES
During this year at Yav, where I was given the opportunity to serve and learn, I realized a radical change in myself, from the way I think to the way I act.
Before, I considered myself a more reserved person. Although it seemed like I expressed everything, I always tended to keep my true opinions to myself regarding certain topics, from politics to my own feelings, for fear of making people uncomfortable or being seen as strange.
I was afraid of being alone because of my opinions, of making people uncomfortable, thinking that if I withdrew into myself I could fit in. But thanks to the events that occurred in my life while I was in the program, I realized that trying not to draw attention to myself isn't a good way to exist. To exist is to make people uncomfortable, to show that we are truly present.
All of this was thanks to the things I did with the YAV program, university, community service, and the little moments I had for myself to do the different things I enjoy, including watching One Piece, which I've mentioned whenever I can. Thanks to it, I've been able to see how reality can be portrayed in a series, opening my eyes to certain things and contributing to the changes in my life, taking the characters as examples of how I should be.
These changes have made me stand up for my beliefs and truly think about what I want for my future, allowing me to dream, with the belief that what I desire will become reality and not just remain another dream.
Something that hasn't changed is my religious stance. While we've had religious gatherings and I've met many people involved in this area, I still don't consider myself religious. I deeply respect and admire those who dedicate their service to God, saying it's their calling of faith and that in this way they will repay all the blessings they have received. For me, religion still isn't a path that appeals to me, but through this program, I've seen how religious groups operate and the social work they do in the world, demonstrating that their faith is about giving love.
Before, I had too many insecurities, which made me doubt my abilities and prevented me from freely expressing myself. But in this phase, I've learned that it's not worth living to please others and settling for something I don't truly love doing; that's not living.
This is what I would tell my past self, the one who existed to please others and play it safe without taking risks: to live is to make people uncomfortable, to live is to make mistakes and learn, to get up and try again, even if I fail time and time again. No matter how complicated it is, and if everything becomes too difficult, you simply have to laugh, because a smile will always be the greatest proof of love and resilience you can show yourself.
That's why I take risks, because I don't want to live a life of regrets. I want to look back and smile at the path I've traveled.
